How To Teach A Child About The Holy Spirit
Teaching Children About the Holy Spirit: A Guide for Parents
Do you want to know how to teach a child about the Holy Spirit? I'm Nicoline Peck, and I specialize in parenting, effective communication, and building strong family bonds through the principles of self-government. I'm also a spiritual person, and today I want to share insights on how to help children understand and discern the Holy Spirit.
In this article, we'll discuss how children perceive the Holy Spirit, and then we'll explore practical ways you can introduce and explain these spiritual concepts to them.
Children's Spiritual Awareness
From the moment they are born, children experience the world through their senses and emotions. Before they can even speak, their primary mode of understanding is through feelings—everything is spiritual to them. Holding a newborn baby, you can feel the pure, innocent light they possess. This innate spirituality gradually becomes clouded as they grow and make choices, but their early years are marked by a heightened spiritual sensitivity.
A friend of mine once shared a story about her son, who was incredibly in tune with spiritual feelings even before he could speak. He could sense when something was off with someone who entered their home and would react strongly to negative emotions like yelling. This sensitivity is a reminder that children are naturally attuned to spiritual things from a very young age.
Teaching Children About the Holy Spirit
Recognizing that we are all spiritual beings is crucial when teaching children about the Holy Spirit. Our spirits and bodies are interconnected, and children often have an even stronger sense of this connection. When introducing children to the Holy Spirit, explain that the Holy Spirit communicates with the spiritual part of us, guiding us in understanding what is good, bad, true, or false.
I explain to my children that, unlike God, who has a physical form, the Holy Spirit does not have a body. This allows the Holy Spirit to move freely and communicate with our spirits. This communication helps us discern truth, feel comfort, and gain wisdom.
Helping Children Feel and Recognize the Holy Spirit
To help your children recognize the Holy Spirit, read them stories from the scriptures that convey spiritual truths. Discuss these stories, pointing out moments of truth and asking them to reflect on how these truths make them feel. When someone expresses love, like a parent saying "I love you," encourage your child to notice the feelings of warmth and truth that arise.
Parents can guide their children to stop and assess their feelings and thoughts, comparing them to the truths they have learned. A strong foundation in truth helps children resonate with and understand new spiritual experiences.
Encouraging Prayer and Spiritual Guidance
Teach your children to pray for the Holy Spirit's guidance. Let them see you praying for the Spirit's presence, guidance, protection, and inspiration. Explain that the Holy Spirit can manifest in various ways—persistent thoughts, feelings of warmth, expanded knowledge, or fleeting impressions that prompt action.
Over time, children can learn to follow these spiritual promptings. They will recognize that these impressions often come from beyond themselves, leading them toward safety and truth.
Living in Truth
To effectively teach your children about the Holy Spirit, embody the principles you teach. Live in truth and calmness. If you preach calmness and truth but fail to practice them, it can undermine your teachings.
